  Group Classes

Six-week training courses are available on Tuesday evenings in Hessle.  Each class lasts 45-50 minutes.  A maximum of eight dogs are enrolled on each course: this allows individual attention for each dog and sufficient numbers for controlled socialisation.  The classes are suitable for dogs of all ages.

You are welcome to come along and watch the class without your dog before booking your place.  Please contact me to check that classes will be running on the evening of your visit.

What Dogs Can Come to Class?

The classes are suitable for puppies and dogs of all ages, all breeds, all shapes and all sizes!

The earlier you start training your puppy the better - a six-week old puppy is quite capable of learning basic things like Sit, Down and Come Here - as long as they are taught using reward and positive reinforcement.

The idea that you cannot train your dog until he is at least six-months old is a throwback to the days of harsh, compulsive training that involved lots of pushing, shoving, yelling and yanking around.

The youngest puppies to start class have been an 8-week old Old English Sheepdog and and 8-week old Shar Pei, and the oldest was a 10-year old Labrador who came for fun because her new doggy-housemate had enjoyed himself so much!  However, Cadi the Border Collie holds the record for the longest-standing class member, celebrating her 13th birthday in class in April 2016!

The classes are aimed at pet dogs so are suitable for all breeds - it doesn't matter if your dog is a cross-breed, pedigree or mongrel, they are all dogs and their minds all work in the same way!

Obviously there are a high proportion of the more common breeds (Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Border Collies, etc) but the classes have seen their fair share of unusual breeds including Japanese Akita, Shiba Inu, Shar Pei, Russian Black Terrier, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Tibetan Mastiff.

Neither does it matter what size your dog is - everything from Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers to Great Danes and Newfoundlands have successfully completed their basic training

Classes are not suitable for dogs showing fear or aggression towards humans or other dogs and are not appropriate for dealing with noise phobias, separation anxiety, or housetraining and destruction problems.  If your dog shows any of these problems, please contact me to arrange a behaviour consultation.

Pet Manners

What will your dog learn?

The six-week basic training course includes teaching your dog to sit, lie down, stand, come back when called, walk nicely on the lead, stay and leave food when asked. We also practice good manners in this class, teaching the dogs not to jump up at people to say hello, to be polite to the other dogs and to pay attention to you even when there are other dogs and people around.

What will you learn?

Training classes are not just about your dog learning new things - you will be learning as well! You will learn how to teach your dog to do all the things mentioned above, how to interact and communicate more effectively with your dog, how to read your dog and understand why he does the things that he does.

Good Citizen

This six-week course is open to those dog-handler teams who have completed a Pet Manners course with Just Pet Dogs.  The course progresses your dog's basic training to a level suitable for taking the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze Test.  Further courses are available once your dog has achieved the Bronze Award.
